HOW TO MANAGE HANGXIETY
Going out and celebrating with friends and family is always fun, but a lot of people often dread the hangover the next morning - and the nasty things that come with it!
In this blog, we learn more about hangover anxiety and how it can affect you.

WHAT IS HANGXIETY?
Hangover anxiety, commonly known as ‘hangxiety’ is when you feel anxious after you have been drinking, it normally goes hand in hand with a normal hangover.
Have you ever noticed that when you drink alcohol you, and the people around you, have a carefree and happy attitude?
This is because alcohol is a depressant, it affects part of your brain by stopping you feeling worried or stressed.
But when this part of the brain is suppressed for long periods, the feeling of worry and stress can come back stronger when you start to sober up, which can lead you to experience hangxiety.
Other factors which cause you to suffer from hangover anxiety, such as:

YOUR HANGOVER
Physical symptoms of a hangover such as tiredness and nausea can intensify your hangxiety. Alcohol is a diuretic which means it extracts the water out of your body, leading to dehydration, which can also worsen hangxiety.
SUFFERING FROM ANXIETY
People who suffer from anxiety disorders often drink alcohol in social situations to help them relax. This may work in the short term, but when the effects of alcohol wear off it can lead them to feel much worse.
BEER FEAR
Not remembering what you did the night before, and not knowing whether you did something you regret can lead to hangxiety. The fear of the unknown can be scary for a lot of people.

WHAT DOES HANGXIETY FEEL LIKE?
You can have emotional symptoms such as feeling tense, and a constant feeling of dread. But you can also have physical symptoms, such as headaches, heart racing, being restless and having trouble relaxing.

HOW TO EASE YOUR HANGXIETY SYMPTOMS?
Hangover anxiety is a lot more common than you think, 22.6% of people experience hangxiety when they drink[1].
The best thing to do is to ease your hangover symptoms first, you can do this by resting and drinking plenty of water to rehydrate yourself.
Once you’ve got your hangover under control, you can start to tackle the hangxiety.
Similar to anxiety relief methods, you can use mindfulness techniques such as meditation and deep breathing. This helps to make you more aware of the present moment, rather than worrying about what has happened in the past.
Another way to ease your symptoms is talking about how you are feeling to someone you trust, which can help you to process and rationalise your thoughts.
